My artistic work is marked by an inner feeling of being a rootless nomad, the sentimental residue of history that I carry with me, plus my quest to understand my identity in relation to my past, present, and future.
I see myself as a “artistic wanderer”, someone who conceives reality, distorts it, and then reassembles the elements during my choreographic search for the beauty in ordinary everyday life.
For me, dance is a complex form of artistic expression best not restricted to a single aesthetic. I strive to synthesize many contemporary dance approaches and techniques so that they better serve my artistic vision.
My choreographic goal is creating a universe uniting dancer and an audience inspired by dancers using their physicality to explore existential questions: the meaning of shared experiences and personal relationships, how people relate to their surroundings, and empathizing with people facing serious issues confronting today’s society.
Eva Kolarova in our words:
When we first came upon choreographer-dancer Eva Kolarova’s teaser video “Matière” (scroll down to see it), our takeaway was direct: “We have to find out who this person really is!”
More than just the choreography, those lasers in “Matiere” bespoke a profound, complex creativity, including a singular skill to unite the perfect team with the perfect credentials to execute a very complex performance.
Then, after we saw Kolarova’s “Blue Dependance” trailer, we understood right away that here was a passionate, driven creator determined to apply the art of dance movement in the portrayal of emotion, especially the emotive challenges when people confront pressing social issues.
Born in the Czech Republic and now a citizen of Canada, Kolarova’s professional background is for sure atypical. Her dance education began at the National Dance Conservatory in Prague. While in her mid-teens, she made up her mind to set out on her own: to break from the Conservatory’s formalistic ballet training regimen and instead find her place in the world of contemporary ballet and modern dance.
Not without great effort and sacrifice, either. Kolarova made her way to Switzerland where she was enrolled at the Rudra Bejart Ballet School in Lausanne – at 16 years old, she is one of only a very few ever to be accepted by that eminent institution at such an early age. Kolarova’s cv, summarized below, chronicles all that happened next, establishing her as a pre-eminent dancer, artist, choreographer, creator, and performing arts leader.
Today, as an acclaimed independent choreographer and dancer in Montreal, Kolarova is embarked on a focused new mission both to create her own choreography and to work with other choreographers in LocalMotion Lab, a unified creative force she has founded to bring new works to the stage.
Kolarova in fact is totally absorbed by the idea of collaboration. She is bringing together outstanding dancers, musicians, and other visual artists to explore non-dance artistic mediums such as video projection, sound, text, and props not normally associated with dance. When properly drawn together, she believes, these many disparate elements greatly enrich the power of self-expression: melding things tangible with the emotive abstractedness of dance itself.
More to come, says Eva Kolarova. We can’t wait!
