…We are of a certain opinion, one wholly positive, about Kentucky native Olivia Ramsey after having the chance to meet with her when she responded to our casting call for NPAFE’s Arc and Sound of Dance film project. We heard her words, saw her smile, and listened carefully as she spoke of her own hopes, her dreams, and especially her decision about how best to make her way forward in her career as dancer, choreographer, photographer, and filmmaker of dance.
…Indeed, we came away from that very first meeting with Ramsey realizing that we had just befriended someone not only motivated by a deep love of dance but also someone courageously determined to make her way forward by planting herself squarely in the rough-and-tumble of New York City’s intensely competitive industry of dance.

…Which is what she has done. A 2022 SMU graduate not that long out of school, Ramsey is eloquent when explaining why she made the move: if she is to achieve excellence both in dance and in the capturing of dance in photography and video, she will do best by diving deeply into New York’s performing arts universe. She explains: with so many of her friends and professional contacts who have already made their way there, the “Five Boroughs” offers her a singular professional network, one combined with an unmatched wealth of concrete opportunity, for refining her skills at translating her own imagination into choreographic movement and, together with that, for discovering how best to capture dance digitally in stills and video.

…Which is what she has set out to do, too. A close look at her website and her two Instagrams discloses that Ramsey is especially sensitive to the wealth of options – ones that most of the rest of us don’t even know exist – to manipulate all sorts of “behind-the-camera” technology to spellbind the viewer with the real magic of dance.
…In a New York City where there’s no shortage of performing arts photographers and videographers, one can see in her work a fascinating, compelling, one-of-a-kind sense of self: how she identifies what, in her mind’s eye, is captivating not just about the art of dance itself but also what a real live dancer might be feeling at the very moment of performance, when the artist is using the movement of his or her body to convey emotion, to convey story.

…This is clearly self-evident in the way Ramsey weaves together stills to create videographic fluidity of movement. You can see it for yourself, for example, in the September 23, 2023 Instagram video just below. In our view, it is one of the best single instances of how someone skilled both in dance and the manipulation of technology can go way beyond conventionality when assembling pieces of a dance puzzle into a dazzling digital whole. Together with dance itself, this is something Ramsey dearly wants to be known for. And should be. And will be.
